Ha! That is cruel, but sort of funny. In fact, it would be really funny if I didn't have my doubts about his treatment of the animal. Nevertheless, it is funny. I'm not giving him anything, but I'll try to keep up on what happens June 30!
Okay, upon further consideration, I think that it is perfectly ethical to kill Toby if Toby is eaten. If somebody wants to give money to keep Toby alive, then that's their decision (or, better: their problem). If under $50,000 is gathered by June 30, and the guy eats the rabbit - good for him. I hope he picks a good recipe.
Something in me finds it a cruel thing to make a joke of the suffering of other creatures, even if it's ok to kill them for food. But after all, it is a hoax. It was done as someone's idea of a joke to get people upset. It was a copycat of several other sites with the same basic idea. Each of those sites likewise were jokes. The site was listed as a hoax at urbanlegends.about.com, with a note that at one time, it did actually state at the bottom that it was a joke.
