Yet another busy week. Is there any other kind? Our heifer had a bull calf on Monday and promptly crashed with what I thought was milk fever. After four days and nights of playing vet, it looks like she's going to make it. God is good regardless of whether or not he lets your beasts live, but I'm thankful for answered prayers, even on a cow's behalf. :)

Would you care for dandelion fluff?

These two might be related.

You will note the haircut he's been working on. The other side looks like it's been shaved with a 40.

At 9 1/2 weeks - He's big enough for the bumbo already and his 3 month duds are beginning to get snug.

His favorite things are:

Mornings
Mommy
Conversation about nothing in particular
Questions - he does his best to answer
Singing
Baths

He is very congenial until around 6PM every day.

He's giving himself a "roadkill-on-head" military style haircut. I'll get a photo.

He is passionately and possessively loved by Lizzie. I often have to remind her to share him. Sounds cute, right? It's not.

After Four Long Years...

Walter is free of his boots! We must celebrate!

He was his usual funny self at the Dr.'s office. He danced for them, performed his best tippy-toe kicking, informed both doctors that "Joshy has so many knives!", and when asked if he had any brothers and sisters, he counted them off: "Yes, I have TWO sisters and a Toot, and my brother who I chase down and wrestle, and a baby Dan-yo!"

Thankfulness - Day 2

Today I'm thanking the Lord for:

- freedom from a headache!
- the energy boost that comes after a migraine goes away
- children frolicking in the field
- dinner, halfway done already
- a sleepy baby and toddler when I need to work outside in the cold wind
- time to plant
- a self-sacrificing husband
- wind chimes singing outside my window

Thankful

I've wanted to start a journal to record the many things that I have to thank the Lord for. This aspiration, and ones like it, are often put off indefinitely because I feel that I need to begin on the right page: I need a pretty notebook; I need to rework my schedule so I can squirrel away a half hour a day for such things; I need to do x,y, and z first. I also waffle about whether I should blog my thoughts or keep them to myself. Who am I writing to? or for? Does the world really need one more disjointed mommy blog? Should I use "nursing time" for a higher purpose?

Life is always changing. It will never stand still. The rut that I would dearly love to fall into evades me as I'm constantly whacking the brush away to blaze some new trail. Today I'm going to cease from introspection and type, simply because I don't want to forget - and I do! Once in awhile I look back through old posts and see just how much.

Yesterday I awoke with a headache which, after a long day in town and then several hours in the garden, turned into a migraine. Sleep is elusive when I'm in pain, and on top of that Daniel thought that 3AM would be a good time to greet the day, so I brought him out to the living room to allow Josh to sleep. Eventually Daniel grew bored of cooing at the curtain rod and drifted back to sleep. Exhausted and rather nauseous from the throbbing in my head, I followed suit.

At some point Joshy and Emmy made breakfast for themselves and the younger kids, cleaned the kitchen, swept the floors, and kept the little ones happy and quiet so I could rest. Then they put a not-so-willing toddler down for her nap and went out to weed and water the gardens and do some cleaning in one of the sheds.

Surprise is not what I feel, after all they are being trained for a life of service; no, it is deep gratitude for the loving way they accomplished all of these things. How blessed I am to be their mother!

The Nose

One evening, Annie was making dinner. Walter came crashing through the door and proclaimed loudly with decided disgust:

"(deep inhale through his nose) It smells like a DEAD BIRD in here!"

I would like to take this opportunity to apologize for any future offense he may cause. He has inherited my sense of smell.

I always take way more photos than I'll ever have time to share.

He'll be eight weeks old tomorrow and is getting to be a jovial, conversational fellow. He especially enjoys his visits with the black and white photos in the bathroom. His eyes, once fixed upon them, light up with a cheerful glee. :)

Silly Things

Addie(5), heard racing through the yard: "991! 991! This is an URGENCY! Someone is hurt!" ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This afternoon Joshua and Emmy took it upon themselves to deep clean both of the upstairs bathrooms. One of them had been used for washing paintbrushes and the like and it was quite a horrendous mess. At one point I overheard them exclaiming at something: Emmy(7): "Joshy, look! It's coming right off!" Joshua(9),in his most know-it-allesque tone: "Of course it is. It's powerful. I'll call it 'Warrior59'" I'd give you the recipe for this wonderful stuff but he has plans to mass produce and market it. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Walter (4): "I BLASTED OFF! That means that I fell off the floor." Lizzie (2): "No, Doll-toe (Walter)." And then a fight broke out and the cuteness was gone. All gone.

As usual, I took way too many photos during his first two weeks. There's no time to share even a small fraction of them, but I'm happy I have them. For myself. For him. Maybe even his children. I love looking through old photos of my family and comparing them to the little faces that surround me. Perhaps he will too. :)

It's 3...AM

I woke up to take the kids to the bathroom and discovered that the garlic rosemary sourdough loaves I was proofing in the fridge were ready to bake. As I keep over-rising them, I decided to go ahead and bake. You can imagine the wonderful smell wafting out of the oven. Oh.

Sweet Brother

Walter (3) and Lizzie (1) have their fair share of squabbles over trifling matters such as one of them wanting to pat the other on the head or the fetching of the others cup. Why it's adored sometimes and cause for WWIII at others is beyond me. Some days I do an awful lot of correcting and instructing them how to speak to and treat each other, and by the end of the day, I'm ready to roll them in duct tape and stick them into their respective corners. Tonight, however, my ears were treated to the precious sounds of fellowship and they shared a giggle together. It must have inspired the song-writer in Walter, who began to sing, "Wizzie, you are such a diamond to meeee. How I wuv your witt-o sewf..."
